The Spotlight’s on ...
The German-American Society
The German American Society was founded in October 1978 by Dr. Verne &
Helga Schmidt, Dr. H. T. & Beulah Engelhardt, and W. Frank & Helgard
Suhr. That makes the organization almost 30 years old!
The goals of the society are to promote the awareness and preservation
of German heritage in Comal County. The membership is largely drawn from
the New Braunfels area, but some members live in other states and in
Germany.
The annual Maskenball (Mardi Gras Dance) has been held since 1979 and
upholds an old German tradition. This year the Maskenball was held on
Feb. 10 at Eagles Hall. Check the January-February-March 2009 IMPART for
information on the next Maskenball. Another activity of The German
American Society is the sponsorship of concerts and provision of housing
to visitors, thus building better relations between Texans and Germans.
Officers for this year are: Ron Evans, President; Aloisia Chinchilla,
Vice President; Diane Moltz, Secretary; and Carola LeMieux, Treasurer.
The German American Society meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7
p.m. at the Elks Lodge on S. Seguin Avenue.
The Greater New Braunfels
Arts Council focuses the spotlight on a different member organization in
each newsletter. |
