The Spotlight’s on ...
The German American Society
The German American Society of New Braunfels, Texas, was founded
in the late 1970s by a group of German immigrants and descendants of
German immigrants to uphold the customs and traditions of their
forefathers and the rich culture they brought with them to the New
World. The purpose of the Society is to encourage the use of the German
language; to identify and preserve the valuable elements of Texas
culture contributed by Germans; to encourage German-American exchange;
and to promote activities within the community that reflect cultural
values of German origin.
One of their priorities is participation in local festivals. They
participate in the Folk Fest at Heritage Plaza; the Wein & Saengerfest
in downtown New Braunfels; and Wurstfest on the banks of the Comal River
in Landa Park. They hold an annual picnic in Landa Park and sponsor an
Annual Maskenball (German Mardi Gras) held in February each year. They
also hold an annual Weihnachtsfest (Christmas Party). Both the
Maskenball and the Weihnachtsfest are very well attended.
With the Gemischter Chor Harmonie, they sponsor the Edelweiss Kinder
Chor von New Braunfels. This group of children (ages 5-13) is dedicated
to preserving German heritage by singing traditional songs at various
community events. The German American Society also sponsor Deutsche
Sprachschule, where the German Language is taught to children and adults
in the New Braunfels Area.
The German American Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month at
6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge on South Seguin Avenue.
